That the observed capacities of UAP are beyond our own, while very well being of a non-terrestrial nature, has irrepressible implications for religion and its scholarship, and poses the question of UAP’s implication in human spirituality, including the possibility or mechanics of an afterlife. Further, there is a striking dovetailing between matters pertaining to death & dying and UAP contact & alien abduction. Salient evocations of this are myriad: Nick Pope (Contact in the Desert, 2024) announced, in the context of the ontological challenges to ‘disclosure’, that such entities encountered may be “coming from afterlife, i.e. dead people, ancestors. Thus, if true, it means not just that aliens exist, but would be indisputable proof that we live forever”. Kenneth Arnold, witnessing ‘flying saucers’ weeks before Roswell, believed their provenance was the self-same place we are destined for when we die (Kripal, 2022). Anne Strieber, upon reviewing the many responses to Communion involving the presence of the deceased, asked ‘Does what we refer to as the abduction process have “something to do with what we call death?” ’ (Strieber & Strieber, 2016). Hancock (2005) drawing on Vallee (1993)’s comparison of faerie folklore-associated with spirits of the dead (Evans-Wentz, 1911)- and abduction narratives, has also assiduously co-identified the two with experiences with ayahuasca (vine of the dead). Cutchin (2022) has coalesced the ubiquitous archetype of death, including its manifestation as NDEs, with “the paranormal” including UAP. Idiosyncratic NDEs with components far more expectable in UAP accounts, such as high technology or even medical procedures, have also been reported (Michael et al, in review; Peake, 2024; Kadagian et al.,2022). It is on this latter aperture into our understanding of this mystery which the present workshop will focus. 20 accounts of NDEs with such UAP-related phenomenology (from YouTube interviews) were analysed using a protocol provided to Chat-GPT, in order to generate idiographic content tables of each unique case alongside anomothetic thematic analysis across all cases for overlapping themes. What insights might such a novel approach reveal? In interweaving this workshop with my lecture (expanding the extratempestrial model to Greys being technologically-dominated and thus spiritually-bereft future transhumans), is one beguiling interpretation that these entities are somehow implicated in our dying experience as Mack (2000) may have inadvertently alluded to- perhaps not just as time-travelling anthropologists (Masters, 2021), but as technological Gods performing as anthropologists of the Soul? Let us have a group discussion about these outrageous “speculocatenations”, including any audience member’s sharing of their own NDEs incorporating such unexpected imagery, or indeed UAP/abductions incorporating explicit NDE themes, alongside what sense-making-if any!- they have thus far wrestled into reification.
