The night sky over Joshua Tree is breathtaking; you can see the arc of the Milky Way within a blanket of stars! Last year, this majestic night sky hosted the Perseid Meteor Shower.
If this is your first experience, then the Joshua Tree Retreat Center will offer a most perfect experience for you. The dark night sky and its unique location will show the shower to be a sky of fireworks. Bring your telescopes, beach or lawn chairs. Showtime usually begins as soon as the radiant (near the Double Cluster in Perseus) clears the horizon, an hour or so before midnight, and climbs higher in the sky throughout the night.
How can I best view the sky?
You can even scan the skies with night vision goggles (available on site, click here for more info) on Friday and Saturday night. Once you have settled at your observing spot, use the night vision goggles, or bring your telescope, then lie back or position yourself so that the horizon appears at the edge of your peripheral vision.
